A teenage dream came true on Sunday when Arnaud BOISSIÈRES finished seventh in his first Vendée Globe. At the age of 17, when he was ill with leukaemia, Arnaud BOISSIÈRES (FRA) was brought by with his father to see the first Vendée Globe heroes and to try and forget fro a few days his illness which had been discovered six months earlier.

At 14:35:50 UTC on Sunday 22 February, BOISSIÈRES, the skipper of Akena Vérandas, crossed the finish line of the 2008-2009 Vendée Globe in seventh place after 105 days, 2 hours, 33 minutes and 50 seconds of racing, averaging 11.04 knots on the water covering 27,841 miles. He sailed the 24,840 theoretical miles at an average speed of 9.85 knots.
    ...
After two and a half years of chemotherapy, BOISSIÈRES decided to earn his living from his passion for the sea. He raced in the 1999 Mini Transat when terrible conditions decimated the fleet. His boat was dismasted, but he completed the race after a pit stop in France. He raced twice subsequently, finishing third in 2001.

He also worked as a preparateur for Yves PARLIER (FRA) and Catherine CHABAUD (FRA) and sailed with Olivier DE KERSAUSON (FRA) on his Oryx round the world race attempt.
    ...
Cali, as BOISSIÈRES is nicknamed, could never have imagined finishing seventh, when he set out. The icing on the cake after a round the world race that he managed prudently on his Open 60 which was launched back in 1998.

A Finot-Conq design with a fixed keel that finished sixth in the hands of Thomas COVILLE (FRA) in 2001 and fifth with Sébastien JOSSE (FRA) in 2005, apart from a ripped solent, a broken wind generator and a satellite dome ripped off in the Pacific, he did not suffer any major damage, in spite of going through some severe storms, including one at Cape Horn, which he rounded for the first time on 16th January.

After a long struggle with Dee CAFFARI (GBR) and Brian THOMPSON (GBR), BOISSIÈRES got left behind in the climb back up the Atlantic, where he was handicapped by his torn solent. After a final North Atlantic low on 6 February, Cali completed his Vendée Globe in light airs in the Bay of Biscay.

Arnaud Boissières made it through this first test with damage to his wind gauge. 6th day A daring easterly option. While the fleet remained tightly packed off Africa, Arnaud decided to attempt an easterly option. He as the first to pass inside the Canaries. Sailing downwind he gradually moved up the rankings. 11th by Cape Verde, he remained cautious knowing that the results of his option would only be seen at the Doldrums. In a few days his rivals managed to fight their way back and a disappointed Cali found himself in 17th place.

Arnaud could no longer send videos and photos. It becomes more complicated to obtain weather information. 67th Day Since early January, Arnaud had been worried about his energy supply. He fears he may not have taken enough diesel on board. He begins rationing by limiting his use of the computer and putting the autopilot in economy mode. He makes the most of the sunshine and manages to repair his wind generator. 68th Day - 15th January Cape Horn lives up to its reputation. A thundery low develops over South America. The forecast announced winds in excess of 80 knots so the three boats were facing a great danger. The race was suspended on the advice of the Race Directors. Arnaud approached the centre of the low where the gusts were under fifty knots.

Today, on Wenesday, the Figaros took the departure from Cowesto sail directly to Le Havre, because the very bad weather on the Channelall the other stopping points have been cancelled.

Good luck Arnaud, we hope you'll finish on the 10 top !

Arnaud Boissières, skipper of the Figaro n° 28 "Région Aquitaine" with Kontron, finished 14th of the 1st part of the Cliffs races. The 31 boats took the departure of this last race of the Solo Sailing Championship, on Saturday morning. The weather was very bad and the wind grew up at more than 40 knots regular, so thecompetitors crossed the Channel in very hard conditions.Arnaud destroyed his main sail just at the arrival at Cowes. All the banana races at Cowes have been cancelled because too much wind.Arnaud 'll have time to repare his main sail beforethe departure of wenesday, in this case he 'llnot take 5 points of penality (if he 'll used a new main sail, he 'll take penalities) and he 'll have all his chances to be the winner for the return race to Le Havre.Good luck Arnaud !

Our skipper Arnaud Boissières is already at Le Havre like the others competitors :

Arnaud termine à la 31ème place.

Arnaud finished at the 35th position, 3h00 after the leader.

Arnaud is 31st...We haven't yet reached Arnaud by telephone, but as soon as we have any news, we will inform you about this 4th race and Arnaud's feeling.
    ...

    ...
Arnaud finished at the 29th position after more than 88 hours of race and is now 31st at the General.

Arnaud was very positiv before starting this 3rd race.He was in a very good position at the beginning of the race until the Birvideaux (South of Belle-Ile).Due to a lack of wind, he had to throw its anchor in ordrer to avoid to go backward (like many competitors). Then he decided to choose an option on the left, wishing to reach the wind as soon as possible before other competitors, but the wind turned in another direction and Arnaud loosed many precious places. Then it was the way towards Gijon in Spain...When Arnaud arrived near the coast of Spain, he choosed an East option, but the direct way would have been a better choice... and Arnaud had to sail a bit more than other competitors : the wind was not so strong on the East side !The crossing of the Gulf of Gascogne was rough : storm, 30 knots of wind.... many competitors have broken their spinnaker, and even a competitor has broken its mat !But nothing happened to Arnaud's boat.

The gap between Arnaud and the leader of the race is now of 16 hours... and the departure of the 4th and last race will take place tomorrow : competitors will have to reach Quiberon in the South of Britanny.
    ...
    ...
Competitors will have to take care with their boat if they don't want to make damages ! Arnaud and the rest of the race will first run in the direction of Belle-Ile ans then will turn to go down to the Golfe of Gasconge.

Arnaud is a bit disappointed due to its result in the 2nd race ; he promises to give the best of himself during this 3rd race.He said it is the first time for 3 years in the Figaro race that the distance between the first and the last at the General is so important ! During the 2nd race, Arnaud said that all was done at the way-out of the Solent in UK : the stream was in favour of the head of the race, and it has suddendly turned against the rest of the competitors... with a lack of wind !Arnaud has broken a pulley and had to repair it... and then a fishing net was blocked under his boat on the bulb ; Arnaud had to dive under his boat to remove it... during this time, he probably loose many places.
    ...
    ...
Arnaud crossed the finish line on 36ème position, 1h13 after the leader.According to Arnaud and most of the competitors, it was a very short race, even too short.
    ...
Arnaud finished this race at the 33ème position, 6h58 after the leader, Jérémie Beyou.
    ...
Few pictures from Arnaud at Caen on the web site of the Solitaire www.lasolitaire.com, the technical preparation is finished, the boat is ready...begin now for Arnaud the minding preparation to jump ahead in this race as a winner...
    ...
    Arnaud is at Caen !

Left from La Rochelle, last wenesday, Arnaud arrived yesterday evening at Caen and is now with the other Figaros arrived few hours before.
    ...
Next week-end, go to Caen to meet Arnaud and visit his Figaro Region Aquitaine. The day after the arrival of the Solitaire, Arnaud 'll unboard with the team of the great skipper Yves Parlier on his new maxi-catamaran to run the great price "Petit Navire" and the great price of Fécamp
