Cobb is coming to celebrate the station's 100th anniversary, said Clyde Bogle, Upper Coastal Plain Research Station superintendent.
...
"This station on the Edgecombe County side of Rocky Mount is the oldest of 18 research facilities across the state," Bogle said."We provide agricultural research and information to farmers in the area, and operate in a unique partnership between the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and N.C. State University."
Bogle said the station encompasses more than 440 acres with soil and a climate representative of Eastern North Carolina.
"Our research includes studying such crops as corn, cotton, peanuts, soybeans, plus tobacco and swine - all vital to the economy of Eastern North Carolina," Bogle said."Farmers in the area may suffer immense losses, I believe, without the research here."
The station has gained international recognition for its research and Swine Development Center, Bogle said.
"The Swine Development Center opened in 1965 and welcomed visitors from across the globe," he said."We have received an $18 million grant from the Smithfield Food Initiative, which is a pork producer in Virginia, to develop ways to deal with hog farm waste in lagoons.Planning is under way to revamp the Swine Center, which will remain focused on exploring new concepts in swine operations, environmental control, material handling systems and waste management."
He said the public is invited to tour the facility and view exhibits beginning at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
Bogle said Cobb will speak at 6 p.m.
