Miki Bloch, M.D., of Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (NARSAD Young Investigator) is studying the dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) treatment of mood disorders in anorexia nervosa (AN). Undernour-ished patients with AN and also patients with major depression have many hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal dysfunctions, including overproduction of cortisol and underproduction of DHEA. Studies have shown that DHEA positively affects mood in patients with major depression, has immune and metabolic antiglucocorticoid effects, and is positively correlated with bone mineral density in post-menopausal women. Dr. Bloch will treat depressed, underweight AN patients with DHEA in a double-blind, parallel study to determine if DHEA 1) improves depressive symptoms; 2) acts as a beneficial adjuvant leading to weight increase and other metabolic improvements; 3) slows down or reverses osteoporosis in underweight AN patients.
