Chamber President Michael Bloch said Ritter will receive a $100 check from the chamber and a $25 gift certificate from Don's Original in Penfield. It is unclear though, whether Ritter will ever get the joy of seeing his motto on a sign.
    ...
Bloch said the chamber received 315 motto nominations. The five-member Chamber Board narrowed finalists down to five. Those finalists were posted on the Chamber's Web site, www.PenfieldChamber.org, for the public to vote on.Of the slightly more than 100 votes cast, Bloch said 48 percent chose Ritter's suggestion.
    ...
Not only does the town not use its current motto in publications or literature, Bloch said, he doesn't think it is very current.

"I think back in the 1960s, when Penfield was largely open fields, that was important," he said."It doesn't reflect on the people who live here.It reflects on the people in government."

Some 21 percent of those who voted felt the motto should remain "Town of Planned Progress," Bloch said.

The chamber will present the winning motto to the town and ask town officials to adopt it.In the meantime, Bloch said, they will use the motto in their publications and encourage other community groups to do so as well.

Ritter said he hopes to see the new motto adopted.

"Planned progress almost suggests that it always will be in the planning phases," he said.

enlarge Diabetes has taken its toll on the eyes of Michael Bloch, 49, of Penfield. He wishes he had gone on insulin sooner.
    ...
Michael Bloch, 49, of Penfield recently had laser surgery on one of his eyes.

He didn't have the procedure to correct his vision.Bloch had to do it to treat diabetic retinopathy, a condition in which the blood vessels in the back of the eye leak, leading to possible blindness.

Bloch's condition was caught in time, so he hasn't lost vision. But he wishes he had gone on insulin sooner so he could have kept better control of his blood sugar over the years. He was diagnosed with diabetes at age 31.

"I wasn't very good about what I ate.I didn't take care of it the way I should have," said Bloch, who is a headhunter for law firms and is president of the Penfield Chamber of Commerce.

He now uses an insulin pump, which automatically injects insulin depending on how many carbs he eats.He types that information into the pump."I'd be lost without it," Bloch said.

We are writing in response to the recent misleading letter to the editor written by the president of the Penfield Chamber of Commerce, Michael Bloch.

He criticizes us for not participating in a Penfield Chamber candidates' debate. However, he fails to mention that we did participate in the Penfield Business Association's Meet the Candidates night on Oct. 11.

"I take the letter from the town trying to intimidate us," Chamber of Commerce President Michael Bloch said. He's the man who got the letter. He started the chamber two years ago and in that time he says the town refused to work with him on ideas, like a new town motto and message boards. But he's also been openly critical of the board on his own blog, with headlines like "Can the Penfield Town Government be Trusted?"

"I don't think they like the fact that there's a chamber of commerce that's bold enough to speak out on issues that we think are important," Bloch said.
    ...
"Wow, what could happen to me if I'm openly critical, whether it's a resident about an issue where they live, or a business with an issue to do with the town," Bloch said.

Michael Bloch, president of the Chamber of Commerce, said spending $60,000 on a study is a waste of money.

"When it comes to economic development. . . it seems that you don't need to hire someone and pay them $60,000 when most of it is common sense," he said.
