   As a case in point, one of his own clients, Greg Bloch of Triad Art Group Publishing in Stamford, Conn., has had first-hand experience with this form of infringement.
   
   According to Bloch, pirates take pre-existing images, "tweak them in a computer," and call them their own. In one instance, a copyist performed such a modification on a Royo image, and called the resultant work "Royo-like merchandise." Adding insult to injury, the images bore copies of Royo's signature and sold for $2,000 each. By historical standards, such an act is clearly fraudulent because 1) the signature was copied, 2) it required almost no effort, and 3) the intent was to make significant profit at the expense of another artist's creativity. Such forgeries would certainly be shunned by any self-respecting Main Street gallery owner, and so, as Kaufman noted, these spurious images are frequently marketed via the Internet. He has even closed down the computer server of one such criminal at Bloch's behest.

   At the dealer level, though, it seems there may be ways to benignly benefit from this behavior.

   Greg Bloch, president of Triad Art Group Publishing, who also listens to his dealers, says he's been hearing from them that "trade fairs are the same old thing," and not very inspiring. Where, he wonders, are the stretch limos, legendary parties and black-tie events that used to be part of the art business and art trade fairs?
   
   Rather than "compete for the attention span of my galleries with 500 exhibitors, I'd like to raise the bar in the industry and create an elegant event, where I have an opportunity to go one-on-one with clients," he says.
   
   As a collaborative effort with a few other publishers, Mr. Bloch is planning an invitation-only art industry summit meeting with roundtables, banquets, meet-the-artist sessions, seminars, and new-product unveilings at the Breakers Hotel next January.
