According to Dr. Jennifer Blitz, vice president of education at the Nature Museum, TEENS is the natural evolution of the institution's Science Scene: KIDS and TEENS program that was established in 1993. The initial program, which was also funded by HHMI, was created to improve the scientific literacy of disadvantaged children living in Chicago and to encourage minorities to pursue college and science-related careers. Each school year, high school sophomores and juniors (TEENS) spent Saturdays working in the museum as interpreters, and developing and leading workshops for KIDS (fifth through eighth grade) living in low-income housing.

Although the program was successful in fostering greater scientific knowledge among high school sophomores and juniors, it was determined that adding a new component that incorporated younger students would help students prepare for college and a career in science, medicine or technology. "We concluded that the program needed to start earlier; if possible, before the students reached high school," said Blitz.

"By providing teenagers with more encouragement, academic assistance, job skill development and experience before moving to college, it's our hope that more students will make the leap to college," emphasized Blitz.
