   Fire Chief: Gary BlitzChief Gary Blitz is a life long resident of the Twin Tiers.After graduation from High School, he began working for American LaFrance as an assembler.Over his 10 years of service he was promoted to Group Leader Foreman and then Supervisor in different areas of the production of fire apparatus.While at American LaFrance he was enrolled in night classes at Elmira College taking courses in Business Administration.He was also a member of the Army Reserve, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
   
   In 1979 he joined the Elmira Fire Department.Since then he has completed courses at the New York State Fire Academy at Montour Falls and at Corning Community College in the Fire Technology Program.Chief Blitz was promoted to Lieutenant in 1997 and assigned to Rescue 681.

   Landlords are reminded that New York State Property Maintenance Code requires properly working smoke detectors: On the ceiling or wall outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms; In each room used for sleeping purposes and; In each story within a dwelling unit.
   
   Tenants should check with their landlords to ensure that all smoke alarms are working properly and ask them to replace batteries or repair any smoke alarms that are not working.If the landlord refuses to assist the tenant, the tenant should contact Code Enforcement at (607) 737-5654 or click here to submit a code complaint (can be done anonymously).
   
   "With the start of the winter heating season, it's even more important that Elmirans check their smoke alarms and review their fire safety and evacuation plans," added Chief Blitz.
