Mr James Bliss BSc, MBBS, FRCS(Eng), FRCS(Orthopaedics), a knee surgeon with particular interest in knee surgery and sports medicine, works in a large teaching hospital in Central London. He qualified in London in 1990 and underwent basic surgical training in London, Stanmore and Canterbury.In 1995, he was appointed to St Mary's Hospital, Paddington as a higher surgical trainee in orthopaedics and trauma.The circuit involved training in Ascot, Harrow, Reading and Stanmore in addition to Central London. In 2001, he spent a year in knee surgery training via the fellowship programme in the University of New South Wales, Sydney.In 2002, he worked as a locum consultant at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington before being appointed as a consultant knee surgeon at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust, in the same year.Since 2002 his orthopaedic practice, in both the NHS and private practice, has specialised exclusively in knee surgery.He carries out well over 100 ligament reconstructions per year, including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and multi-ligament reconstruction in both acute and chronic setting, using both autograft and allograft techniques.He performs knee joint replacements and has significant interest in osteotomy (realignment) procedures around the knee using state-of-the-art titanium plating and bone graft techniques.

Mr Bliss has been involved in the research on ligament reconstruction, particularly of the anterior cruciate ligament and also in developing new methods of reconstruction of the medial collateral ligament.He has considerable experience in the use and development of collagen grafts for knee surgery and has setup international instructional courses on anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, osteotomy and joint replacement.

Mr James Bliss, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Guy's Hospital, London, said such treatment would increase oxygen at cellular level, which might produce new bone and reduce inflammation. 'But I would be very surprised if it makes a big difference,' he said.

'If he has broken a single metatarsus, it is extremely unlikely he will be playing in the World Cup.A traumatic injury like this usually takes up to three months to heal.'

He added: 'There is a chance he might be able to make it into the final, but only as a late substitute.'

James Bliss, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals in London, said this suggested the scan was not as good news as has been reported.

He also said he could see Rooney limping in pictures of him training, and said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was right to be worried that his star striker could be injured for far longer if he returned to action too soon.

Mr Bliss said: "I'm not so sure it is such good news from the scan.
