    KANSAS CITY, MO (Thursday, April 15, 2004) - Kansas City Wizards Assistant Coach Brian Bliss is eligible for one of U.S. soccer's highest honors as he and 37 other former players are on the ballot for election into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

    Bliss was a standout defender for the U.S. National Team in the 1980s and 90s.He was a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team as well as the 1990 U.S. National Team that qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 40 years.Bliss played left midfield on that fateful day in November 1989 when the U.S. defeated Trinidad 1-0 to earn a spot in the 1990 World Cup.His throw-in to Tab Ramos helped set up the "Shot Heard ‘Round the World".In all, Bliss has appeared 38 times for the U.S. National Team after making his international debut against Ecuador in December of 1984 and most recently against Colombia in June 1995.

    The Rochester, New York native also played three years in MLS with the MetroStars and Columbus Crew before finishing his playing career with the Kansas City Wizards in 1998.Prior to MLS, he played six years in Germany where he amassed over 100 career appearances in the Bundesliga.Following his playing career he was named head coach of the Connecticut Wolves of the A-League before joining the Wizards coaching staff prior to the 2000 season.With the Wizards, he was reunited with Head Coach Bob Gansler who coached Bliss and the 1990 U.S. National Team in the World Cup.In Bliss' first season with the Wizards, the team captured their first MLS Cup Championship in October 2000.

    Born in Webster , New York , Bliss starred as a youth in the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) in New York State and was selected to play for the US Youth National Team.While attending Southern Connecticut State University, Bliss began his US National team experience in 1984 that ended in 1995 competing in Copa America in Uruguay .

    In 1987, Bliss was the number one overall draft pick in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) being selected by the Cleveland Force.In 1988, he joined the US Olympic Team that played in Seoul , Korea . Two years later, Bliss found himself playing in Italy as a member of the US World Cup team.Following his US National Team experience, Bliss went to Europe, playing in the German Bundesliga for FC Chemnitz and FC Carl Zeiss Jena .

    When Major League Soccer (MLS) began its first season in 1996, Bliss joined the Columbus Crew for which he played a season and a half.He later played for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and finally with the KC Wizards.

    After retiring from the MLS, Bliss became the head coach for the Connecticut Wolves A-League team and later joined the KC Wizards, serving as the assistant coach and later, head coach.During that time, the Wizards were the 2000 MLS Cup Champions, 2000 Supporter's Shield Winners and the 2004 US Open Cup Champions.

    Former General Manager of the Wizards, Curt Johnson, now Director of Marketing for the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team, thinks Bliss is a great addition to Kansas Youth Soccer.

    Bliss, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation 'A' Coaching License, began his coaching career in 1999 as head coach of the A-League's Connecticut Wolves, which he guided to a 22-point improvement that season.

    He then returned to Kansas City, where he served as a Wizards assistant coach from 2000-July 2006 and as interim coach from July-Dec. 2006.During his tenure in K.C., the club won MLS Cup and the Supporter's Shield in 2000 and the 2004 U.S. Open Cup.

    Prior to MLS, Bliss played for Carl Zeiss Jena (1992-95), Chemnitzer FC (1991-92) and Energie Cottbus (1991) of the German Second Division, Boston Bolts (1990) and Albany Capitals (1989) of the APSL and Cleveland Force of MISL (1987-88).

    Columbus named U.S. World Cup veteran Brian Bliss the club's first-ever technical director Tuesday night.
