About Benny Bliss - Alabama State Legislature District 43
    ...
    About Benny Bliss

Bliss has lived in the district since 1991 and was the longtime owner of Little Gatlinburg in Alabaster and Inverness. Today, he is the Director of Special Markets for Long's Electronics, managing the educational and governmental divisions of the company.

Bliss, 48, born in Birmingham, attended Auburn University and graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a BS degree in Criminal Justice. He has two children, Andrea and Trey.

Andrea attends the University of Montevallo and later plans to to the Savannah College of Art & Design. She has a keen eye for this art and is able to see things through a camera lens that normally go unnoticed by most people. She has hopes of one day landing a job as a photographer for National Geographic or Time Magazine.

Trey is in the sixth grade at Oak Mountain Middle School. He is in the gifted program and has a thirst for knowledge. It is rare to find him without his nose in a book. One of his classmates did a report on him and noted that one day Trey will be a famous scientist. He loves to swim, active in Boy Scouts, play video games and anything related to science, especially herpetology ... the study of snakes. One day, he may be recognized for inventing something or finding the cure for a disease that will benefit mankind.

Bliss ran for the Birmingham City Council in 1981 and has advised and managed numerous political campaigns since then.

Bliss is past president of the Warblers Club and currently serves on their Board of Directors.

He serves Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity as Chapter Advisor Emeritus at UAB and as Corresponding Secretary for the Board of Advisors at Auburn University. He is Vice President of the Alumni Association and is an alumnus volunteer for the International Headquarters.

Bliss is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honorary.

Bliss has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and organized Operation School Supplies, a drive to collect school equipment for schools damaged by Hurricane Ivan. A trailer load of new equipment was donated to these schools. He also recently organized the Hurricane Katrina Relief Drive, teaming Long's Electronics and TKE Fraternity to raise money and personal hygiene items for the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, raising over $45,000. Benny has been working on behalf of the Woodlawn High School Mural Committee to raise funds to restore the cultural art treasure that surrounds the stage at the Woodlawn auditorium. This project is being coordinated by the Metropolitan Arts Council. Most recently, Bliss organized Operation Katrina Coats, collecting winter coats for Hurricane Katrina victims. Hundreds of much needed coats were donated to those in need.

Bliss considers himself a Ronald Reagan Republican, one who sees the best in people and believes that America's best years are yet to come. As fraternity brothers, there are similarities between the two ... both served as President, Pledge Trainer and Rush Chairman of their respective chapters. One difference, Ronald Reagan had his Nancy ... Benny is looking for his!
