BRUNSWICK - Arthur Dean Bliss, of Bath, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Bodwell House in Brunswick, after a courageous struggle with cancer.
He was born in Waterbury, Conn., in 1927, a son of Katherine May Dean and Arthur Phelps Bliss.He attended the Taft School in Waterbury, Conn., and graduated as valedictorian.He received a bachelor of science degree and a doctorate in chemistry from Yale University, where he was elected to Sigma Psi and Phi Beta Kappa.
He served in the Navy twice, in World War II with the rank of RT3, and in the Korean conflict aboard the U.S.S. Picking (DD 685) as an SK3.
He worked for the Olin Corporation in New Haven, Conn., joined Hoechst Celanese as director of research in its plastics division and worked for Wellman, Inc., in Johnsonville, S.C., as director of research and development.He was awarded numerous patents in his field.
