When bard Lucia Blinn seeks fodder for poetry, she often finds inspiration in the ambiance of her high-rise condo overlooking a park and the lake on the North Side.

To fuel creativeness and instill a warm sense of home, when Blinn decided to decorate her new condo, she chose a marriage of color, nature and an opportunity to incorporate treasured keepsakes and furniture from her previous residence.

Blinn bought her Lakeview condo early last spring. The 3-bedroom, 3-bath residence has 1,800 square feet of space and two balconies. Stunning views are enjoyed from plenty of windows in the corner unit. After several major interior renovations and an interior design scheme with a professional decorator, Blinn moved into her comfy home last autumn.

"I'm mad about this place. It's beautiful. I love the light, the balconies, being across from the park and lake, and of course, the view. I have literally hundreds of sailboats in my back yard," said Blinn, a self-published poet and retired creative director for a Chicago-based advertising firm.

Like many home rehabs, "it was the usual renovation hell," said Blinn, who resides on the 25th floor of the 26-story high-rise. The condo's red-and-orange tiled flooring and gray carpeting were removed and replaced with cork flooring throughout, and new windows were added. The master bath required the most extensive work--a complete gut rehab--while the powder room received minor changes, such as a new vanity made from an old dresser.

Today, the residence is an artistic palate of plants, light and bold, yet warm colors predominated by a tomato red in the living and dining rooms, blues in the kitchen and foyer and taupe in all three bedrooms.

"These are basically the colors I had in my last apartment," said Blinn, who lived for 23 years in a vintage mid-rise condo building, also along the city's northern lakefront.

To help incorporate nature and color, Blinn enlisted the expertise of interior designer Susan Fredman, president of Susan Fredman & Associates, based in Northbrook.

Fredman also worked with Blinn on decorating her previous condominium.
    ...
"Susan knew my taste and she knew my furniture," Blinn said.
    ...
Since Blinn is a big fan of Mother Nature and loves gardening, Fredman says it was important to have the outside in.
    ...
"Obviously Lucia doesn't have her own garden, but she does have the feel [view] of the whole park as her own. So, I took that space, brought it in and made it livable."

    ...
"In a home like Lucia's, where the focal point is outside, you need dramatic color to keep the focus and drama inside.
    ...
The home's entry opens to a 9-foot-long hallway that also serves as a gallery for Blinn's art collection. To the right of the foyer is a large storage area (Blinn calls it her "garage") and an entryway flanked by a pair of large walk-in closets that lead to the master bedroom. The master bedroom has its own balcony, which Blinn created into a white flower garden.

To the left of the foyer, there's a powder room, guest room and library, which does double-duty as Blinn's office.

The circular plan leads to a large living room that opens to the dining room. Both rooms are bedecked in light via plenty of windows, while the dining room also has sliding glass doors that lead to a second balcony brimming with flora.

As for Blinn, you can find her most days composing poetry, enjoying the scenery and the fresh air on one of her two balcony gardens.

"I think it's incredibly beautiful," Blinn said. "Although I moved here because I really wanted a washer and dryer, which my other [condo] didn't have, I really wanted a view, outdoor space and to be in this neighborhood.

"I never thought all these things would come together, so when they did, I grabbed it. It's very comfortable."
