Joyce Blinn, assistant director of the Study Skills Lab, suggests students choose classes that fit their individual needs.

"This year we have more offerings and offer a broader span of topics," she said.
    ...
According to Blinn, one of the areas students request the most help in is time management.
    ...
The fair is being held about halfway through the semester because many students have taken their first exams of the year and may recognize areas they need help in, Blinn said.

"We want to catch students as soon as they see a need rather then later. We pick lectures on courses that have been challenging to students," she said.

Some workshops are on slightly more lighthearted topics, such as "Word Play -- Having Fun with Poetry," a new session this year.
    ...
"Many faculty are devoting their own time because they have a commitment to helping," Blinn said. "It's just one hour of your time.

Joyce Blinn, assistant director of academic enhancement/study skills lab at Bowling Green State University, says that the type of student-driven academic experience that freshmen encounter is very different from the kind of education they had in high school. Even if your child was a straight-A student in high school, he or she may struggle during the first academic term. Managing time, maturation its a confluence of all [these] things, Blinn says. Theres no way to prepare for that in high school. Its a totally different culture.

If your student does run into trouble academically, Blinn says that you should focus on what can be done, rather than on what has already happened. Every college and university offers some kind of academic support for students, and Blinn says its up to parents to know ahead of time what resources are available. Theres just so much happening, especially the first semester, Blinn says, that the student may not tell you whats available, so find out on your own.

Blinn says that its also helpful for parents to find out when first exams are given. A parent could tell a student that anything below a B means the student may need help, Blinn says. Parents should encourage their student to make contact with his or her professor. That could simply be going into the teachers office and asking what mistakes are typically made in the class. If students go in with a specific question, theyre more likely to continue seeking help.

Parents should be aware, too, that they may not be getting the whole story from their kids. Blinn encourages parents to also seek the schools side of the story if their first-year student is struggling. Its a fine line for parents to help students see that they need help, Blinn says. Really, encouragement especially for students who have done well in high school is what parents can provide. Sometimes its a real shock that theyre not doing as well as they thought they would in college. Parents should be supportive. Blinn says the quickest way to close the door of communication is to say, I told you so.
