DURHAM - City Attorney Henry Blinder will retire in February, he said Thursday.Blinder has worked 24 years in the city attorney's office, the past 10 as the top attorney. He is leaving as Durham prepares to fight what is likely the largest lawsuit the city has ever faced.Three former Duke University lacrosse players falsely accused of rape have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city and many of its employees, alleging their constitutional rights were violated.Blinder said the case wasn't a factor in his decision. He noted that the city's response to the lawsuit will come out in 45 days, and he will be actively involved in its preparation.
