With that in mind, I sought out Bob Blihar, president of Bay Shore Bicycle Club, whose group organizes some of the many weekly rides that start taking place this time of year and continue through the summer in the Green Bay area.
He offered up practical advice for novices, some of which should be taken whether you are on a group ride or heading out on your own.
• Get a helmet and wear it.
(You know what really cracks me up? When I see parents who have the sense to put helmets on their kids but lack the same concern to protect their own melons.)
• Make sure your bike is in good shape - the tires are properly inflated and the brakes work, for example.
• Find out about the ride before you head out: How many miles is it? -
