   The four months taken for the deal to be conditionally approved were "not bad", said Lizel Blignaut, the competition commission's manager of mergers and acquisitions.
   
   The R4.9 billion deal was approved by the competition tribunal last week, two months after being given the green light by the EU's antitrust regulator, the European Commission.
   
   Evraz had earlier complained that the South African regulator had not finalised the matter even though the company had simultaneously lodged applications with both the competition commission and the European Commission.
   
   Blignaut said the competition commission's probe had taken longer in order to more closely examine the impact on the local market.
   
   For example, the commission had to fully investigate the impact of remedies proposed by Evraz, including the conversion of mining rights related to the proposed sale of Highveld's Mapochs iron and vanadium mine.>
   
   But she added: "The matter might have been expedited had Evraz co-operated and made submissions to South Africa's competition commission at the same time as it did to the European Commission."
   
   Her comments referred to Evraz submitting a remedies proposal to the EU's antitrust regulator, but neglecting to do so to the South African body.
