Larry Blight is Great Southern TAFE's Coordinator for Higher Participation in Indigenous Vocational Education and Training and, after about four months in the job, he is loving every minute of it.
His position with Great Southern TAFE Albany involves working with local Aboriginal high school students in years ten and twelve, who need a bit of direction in life. Larry assists them through the challenging task of achieving their chosen career directions by working with the student, their family and community, the school's Aboriginal Education Officer, the TAFE College, other organizations, and industry.
After leaving Albany Senior High School in 1983, he "worked around a bit" before returning to study teaching through Edith Cowan University. Recently, he spent two and a half years at North Albany Senior High School as an Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer, and then as an Aboriginal Liaison Officer with Albany District Education Office, before taking up his current post at Great Southern TAFE.
Larry has come back to his love of working with his community, its traditions, and its youth. He learnt about local Noongar culture from his elders, listening and applying their teachings to his life.
