"Ideally we'd like to be able to support the South African teachers to come out to the UK," says Blight. He says it's also important for the children, across continents, to learn more about each other. The John Cabot pupils are actively involved with the partnership programme. They've successfully raised funds to sponsor the rent for a youth centre in Alexandra. They have also created digital diaries to share with the Dr Knak learners. "We have a programme at John Cabot about global citizenship so it's important for our children to know about South African children. They need to know what pap is, for example. This experience of teaching in Alex is also good for our personal development as teachers," says Blight. He adds that some of the things the UK teachers have learnt from their South African counterparts include dealing with complex social problems and successful strategies used in local educational structures.
