I was contacted by Conrad, and wanted to clarify a few things per his email. First, Conrad was never the President of NAAFA and is no longer officially associated with the organization.
...
The editor of Dimensions (Conrad Blickenstorfer) has brought this topic up many times, within NAAFA and outside of NAAFA.
...
It seems disingenuous for Conrad to ask how NAAFA can have more influence. Surely he must know that membership has dropped because of his leadership.
...
I don't think dropping the sex aspects would mean NAAFA could go into the mainstream, but I think their association with Conrad Blickenstorfer is a reason to hope NAAFA doesn't get more mainstream attention.
...
Their long-running relationship with Conrad, frankly, disgusts me. He is an enormous threat to the movement, and has done real harm to it already. If not in tainting the mainstream view of the movement, than in warping the perception of FA's. Both by the FA's themselves, and by fat women who have been taught to be wary of FA's under Conrad's self-serving attempts to define them. He's repeatedly used the position of Dimensions to alter the discussion fo what it means to be an FA, constantly invoking a justification and promotion of feederism. Instead of developing people actively involved with the movement, he's been encouraging them to actively oppose it. I've seen countless efforts by his magazine to define feederism as a fundamental element of fat admiration, and it disgusts me the way he's been allowed to dominate this discussion.
...
I think it's great that Conrad reads BFB. Did he mention all the great work you've done to raise awareness? He may not have been the president but think he may have been on the board for a long while.
...
I would wonder if someone didn't tip Conrad off as opposed to him reading independantly. Frankly, he's splitting hairs. He very recently held a major leadership position in the organization. If NAAFA is anything like the non-profit I work for, his position was the top of the food chain. Pointing out that it wasn't "President" forgets the fact that he was the head of NAAFA for an extended period of time in the recent past.
...
The hair-splitting over Conrad not being "president" is just a small example of the sort of manipulative mindgame playing that I mentioned earlier. He was extraordinarily influential on the board (i.e. one of the big three), and, that he was welcomed anywhere in NAAFA at all is the more important point.
...
Not allowing them to get fooled by people like Conrad who only want to convince them that they aren't FA's at all, but really feeders. There is this whole class of people who have every reason to fight for Fat Acceptance who get ignored and pushed away, and all because NAAFA has stood silently buy while someone opposed to Size Acceptance puts out anti-FA propaganda in the guise of Fat porn. FA's need to be educated to see themselves as something more than a sexual identity but to treat being an FA as a personal identity, and one they will fight for. Some FA's are creeps, sure. Some who call themselves "FA's" really are feeders and didn't need any propaganda to be such. But I firmly believe most FA's would and could be valuable foot soldiers for the movement, but they are either put off by the feederist identity promoted by Conrad or pushed away by fat people who've grown weary of the kind of feeder in FA's clothing Conrad's propaganda has produced.
...
Not only is it Rupert Murdoch's world and we only live in it, but if Conrad had not existed, it would have been necessary to invent him.
...
Hey I'm an old campus radical, a voter for McGovern, a Democrat with a fabulous voting record, the 20yr husband of an old radical feminist ... and yet, and yet, I'm very grateful to Conrad for getting the in-house PC squad off my neck and allowing me to get my life's work in front of the public.
...
And I do not like the emphasis on feederism which seems to come with Conrad as a package deal.
...
You can be grateful for Conrad. It's clear that Conrad has support. I might even grant that Conrad had created a space for a SIG and that's all to the good.
...
Conrad Blickenstorfer recently resigned as Chairman; I have joined the Board along with Mary Ray Worley, who some of you may remember from the last NAAFA convention.
...
Conrad, or no Conrad, according to Ned there are people on the board with much loyalty to him and the manner in which he influenced the way NAAFA operates.
