Glen Blickenstaff is ready for the next chapter of his business career.

The Florida native came to Birmingham in 1993 to join Bruno's Supermarkets and spent four years heading the chain's manager trainee program. Then it was off to Marvin's, where he worked for nearly two years as human resources director for the building materials chain.

Six years ago he started a consulting firm, Human Strategies Inc., whose first major project involved helping the Birmingham Zoo find a new leader.

Next up for Blickenstaff: serving as the Birmingham-based chief executive of TaxBreak LLC, a Gadsden firm with an unusual niche that joined forces with his Human Strategies Inc.
    ...
Though only the TaxBreak name remains, Blickenstaff describes the union as a merger. He sees TaxBreak, which was a client of his consulting firm, as a perfect match for his company. In fact, TaxBreak worked with Human Strategies to develop HireEvolution, hiring software that helps companies reduce costs of recruiting applicants to fill positions.

"We were both in the people business, just on different sides of the equation," Blickenstaff said about TaxBreak's Shannon Scott, a technology expert who remains with the company as president.
    ...
Blickenstaff said giving up the Human Strategies name was difficult, but he recognized that TaxBreak has more value as a brand.

TaxBreak, which has 30 employees, last month placed No. 434 on the Inc. 500 list of the nation's fastest-growing private companies. The company's sales surged 662.3 percent from 2003 to 2006, the magazine said.

"It made sense from a recruiting and marketing standpoint because every business wants a tax break," Blickenstaff said.
    ...
Blickenstaff said the transition from human resources consulting to heading TaxBreak has not been difficult, in large part because the new recruiting software project the companies worked on together fits his skills.

Glen Blickenstaff began consulting for the Zoo in 1999 and was key in helping us transition from a public zoo under the City of Birmingham to a private not-for-profit zoo.His primary role was to develop and establish the administration and human resource programs that became the foundation of what we use today. He remained as the outsourced human resource department for a full five years from 1999 to 2004.During that time we matured as an organization and went through a change in operational leadership.

From March of 2003 to January of 2004 Human Strategies, under an operational contract with the Zoo provided direction in the establishment of a budget, marketing and business plan.Glen acted as our General Manager during this time and helped to achieve some aggressive operational goals. The efforts of his company significantly contributed to an improvement in all areas of the operation and helped us to exceed our operational objectives for that year including our financial objectives.

As President of the Birmingham Zoo Board of Directors I worked closely with Human Strategies on our projects.I can enthusiastically endorse them as a professional organization with a track record of excellent performance. When Glen expressed to our Board that it was time for the Zoo to bring his functions in-house, he helped with the transition and has continued to answer questions when needed. Our Board passed a resolution recognizing his company's efforts on our behalf in 2004 when he turned over the responsibilities to our full time staff.
