Carl Bleyle, an Iowa State University professor emeritus of music, has fallen in love with Florence, Italy. It's all due to ISU's "Semester in Florence" program. As Bleyle continues to direct the ISU study-abroad program, he is able to teach students about the rich culture of the Italian city. The course introduces them to the city's music, money, politics and art throughout the ages and how they are all tied together. Now, he and others from ISU's department of music will host a symposium addressing the history and music of Florence on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28 and 29.

"The Capponi family goes back to 1527," Bleyle said.

Bleyle said the Sack of Rome had its origins in the French-Spanish struggle in Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was a clash between the political programs of the Medici Pope, Clement VII and the ambitious Charles V, King of Spain, King of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor. "On May 6, 1527, Rome suffered the worst assault that it had ever known, far worse than anything at the time of the barbarian migrations," Bleyle said. "Nothing was spared - the sacred or profane." Bleyle said various cardinals and prelates were humiliated and tortured, altars were ransacked, the Sistine Chapel used as a stable and the riches of the countryside were confiscated. Bleyle said it has been fun getting to know the Capponi family as he and his students pursue the history of Florence. Bleyle said the students were invited into the Capponi home for several of their study sessions. He said many of the artifacts in Capponi's library have helped them understand the culture of Florence. -
