   Sharing the stage with Madison were Marjorie Blewett, who was a freshman at IU in 1944 when Pyle returned to accept an honorary degree; Bloomington High School South teachers Pam Gunkel and Carla Gardner, who teach students about the famous journalist, and moderator Tom Boscher of Insight Communications.

   Blewett remembered Pyle's visit to IU in 1944 vividly. Since then, she's retired as placement director for the IU School of Journalism, but "1944 doesn't seem so long ago to me," she said.
   
   According to Blewett, Pyle left IU before earning an undergraduate degree to accept a reporting job in LaPorte.

   In light of the sensitive way Pyle reported the evils of war, Blewett felt his honorary degree was well named. "He was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters," she said.
