John L. Blevins was born 24 July 1817 in Tennessee ; census says Tennessee ; one obituary notice says Hawkins county ; another Carter county ; descendants say Sullivan county.A letter written in 1838 refers to him as the young man that was partly raised in ( James P ) McCarty's family and now the son-in-law of A Kyle..
As a youth he was employed as a driver for the Great Eastern and Western Stage Lines , operated by Absalom and William C Kyle of Walnut Hill , Hawkins county , Tennessee. John Blevins , at eighteen , eloped with the sixteen year old daughter of Absalom Kyle.They rode over the mountain to Clinch and were married 29 Oct 1835.Absalom Kyle refused to see them.

In March 1838 , though not yet of legal age , John Blevins was elected Clerk of Hawkins county , a position he had held by appointment since the resignation of the previous Clerk the preceding October.In 1846 and succeeding years he operated a Tavern at Rogersville.In 1849 John Blevins had been elected Clerk of the Bank of Tennessee at Rogersville ; Absalom Kyle was President of the Board of this bank.In November 1854 the Blevins family had lately moved to Aberdeen , Monroe county , Mississippi , where they had relatives.In 1856 they were back in Hawkins county , Tennessee , and John Blevins bought Barsheba Cobb Kyle's dower interest in the Walnut Hill place , including the Mansion House.They made their home there until 1874.
John Blevins was a string Union man , though his eldest son was a Major in the Confederate Army. After the War John Blevins was appointed United States Marshal of the Northern District of Mississippi by President Johnson.His term was from 1866-1868 but his family remained at Walnut Hill.He appointed his brother-in-law L. N. Kyle as his deputy and had conspicuous success.After he returned to Hawkins county , he twice represented it in the State Legislature , once in the house and once in the Senate.He and his family left Walnut Hill 1 Dec 1874 and moved to an enormous log house near Mooresburg , Tenn. During his last years he was greatly afflicted and nearly helpless from paralysis or palsy.He was greatly beloved by all his wife's family and is remembered as one of the kindest , most genial men that ever lived.He died 16 July 1887 and his wife died 14 Sept 1889 ; both are buried at Walnut Hill..
His own children professed not ot know his parentage.His wife's nieces and nephews remembered hearing that he was an illegitimate child.It was common knowledge that when his son Bob married Kate Bean , he was marrying a cousin. John attended Lindsey Wilson Jr. College and Eastern Kentucky State College.He entered service with the National Guard in World War II and became a career officer in the US Army , attaining the rank of Major.He retired from the service after the Korean War.He was employed as a golf pro at Columbus AFB for some time.
