From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. DAV National Service Officers Wess Spencer and Jessie Blevins met with veterans to discuss their medical claims.By noon, nearly 20 veterans had registered to speak with either Spencer or Blevins.
Veteran Reginald D. Edlow, 53, said the red, white and blue mobile DAV service van was convenient for him because it saved him a long trip to the Veterans Affairs office in Hampton, Va., or in Winston-Salem to speak with a counselor.
"It saves me a whole lot of gas," he said.
Edlow, who also is pastor at Highland Fellowship Church, in Elizabeth City, said he spent several years in the Air Force and is currently a chaplain for the Elizabeth City Police Department.
Spencer, 28, is based out of the DAV regional office in Winston-Salem.Blevins is based out of Nashville, Tenn.
According to Spencer, the DAV mobile van was one of about 12 vans used throughout the DAV as mobile service vans.
"This is a two-man office that goes around to the hard-to-reach areas" to assist veterans, he said.
