SCV EMC Chapter would like to especially thank Dr. Freund and Mr. Bleier for agreeing to present to our chapter on very short notice.
...
Dr. Freund will begin the presentation by explaining the deciphering of pre-earthquake signals and how this changes our view of the Earth, then Mr. Bleier will discuss the state-of-the-art in EM monitoring of large earthquakes.

Speaker: Mr. Tom Bleier Subject: "Short-Term Earthquake Forecasting: Is there an Electromagnetic Connection?"
Speaker Bio: Tom Bleier, CEO and Chief Technology Officer, QuakeFinder, Inc. will be one of the speakers at the November 13th, SCV IEEE EMC Chapter meeting. For thirty-seven years Tom Bleier has been developing, building, testing and flying complex defense and commercial satellites and ground control systems. Early in his career Tom became interested in understanding the physics of the pre-earthquake process. He developed ELF magnetometers to detect the electromagnetic signals at the onset of large earthquakes that may provide the key to understanding the warning signs of deadly seismic hazards. What started as an educational outreach program donating time and materials for low frequency (ELF) kits to a handful of high-schools soon obtained technology funding from California State for expansion into a web-based network of over thirty high-school sensors that detected and recorded ELF background signals-looking for earthquakes. With the support of Stellar Solutions, a leading aerospace engineering services provider, in 2000 Tom Bleier co-founded QuakeFinder, a small business in Palo Alto to conduct seismic research with the ultimate goal of saving lives by developing an early warning system of potentially destructive earthquakes much like the existing hurricane or tornado warnings. Already forty additional commercial ELF stations are in operation - some with support from the California Space Authority, and organization that in 2005 bestowed on QuakeFinder its highest recognition - the Spot Beam Award in Space Innovation. Tom Bleier initiated and led the project to build a "proof of concept" 4.5 kg nanosatellite called "QuakeSat" to detect worldwide pre-earthquake ELF signals. This satellite, fabricated with simple off-the-shelf parts, was designed, built and launched in record time in collaboration with Stanford University and has already exceeded four times its life expectancy. Tom holds a BSEE from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY (1967) and worked at Aerospace Corporation for twenty-four years in system engineering, design support, and management of the Satellite Control Advanced Planning Group meriting a special award for outstanding technical contributions in the planning of advanced satellite control architecture. -
