It connects to your telephone system, interacts with your caller ID services from SaskTel or your local telephone company, and then takes that information off the telephone service and overlays it on the television screen," says Doug Bleich, Director of Marketing with TriNexus Technologies. "The phone will ring and you'll immediately know who's calling, and then make the decision about whether you want to pick the phone up."

Bleich says that Caller ID products currently on the market typically have a very small LCD display, either on the telephone itself or as an adjunct to the telephone.

"One of the features of the set-top box technology was Caller ID. Through extensive market research, we determined that there was a market for a stand-alone caller ID product for the television," says Bleich.

With the technology in place, TriNexus then contracted an Edmonton manufacturing company to build the TVMessenger units for sale and distribution, says Bleich.

He says that, at present, the primary market for TVMessenger is North America, with the biggest sector of the market in the United States. "We're focusing our attention primarily on the U.S. market. We have developed a manufacturer's rep organization in the U.S. that is taking the product into retail channels for us. We're also working with the telephone companies throughout Canada and into the U.S. to promote the product," says Bleich.

Bleich says that the response to TVMessenger has been very positive. "We are currently published in mail order catalgoues having a circulation of over 12 million. In their terminology, they're considering our product as 'a hot product'. The response they're receiving is beyond their expectations."

Customers who have purchased the TVMessenger unit have also responded very positively, says Bleich.

TriNexus also has designs on international markets, says Bleich. "The product is designed such that it could also be marketed in the Pacific Rim as well as Europe. From the video aspect, it supports both the North American standard and the European standard. However, at this point, the penetration of caller ID isn't as strong there as it is in North America. As those markets emerge, we will target those countries."

TriNexus continues to develop new telecom products, says Bleich. "We already have the next generation of TVMessenger in production. It will be a higher-end product, with value-added features that the present product doesn't have. It will also have remote control capabilities, and can be programmed into a universal remote control."

Being located at Innovation Place has proven to be a real advantage for TriNexus, says Bleich. "We are able to lean on the technical expertise that is in the park. Our engineers are in contact with engineers from other firms at Innovation Place, sharing ideas, experiences and even test equipment. We really enjoy being part of this community," says Bleich.
