2. Journal Gazette | 01/07/2006 | Barring drought, ethanol industry could boost corn prices

Weather remains the most important factor determining whether local farms will be profitable this year, said Ken Bleeke, owner and manager of the Fort Wayne branch of John Stewart & Associates Inc., a futures brokerage and consulting firm based in San Antonio. Although summer drought caused relatively little damage to last year's crops, farmers could struggle more if this year brings dry weather. Moisture in the soil helped crops continue to grow during last year's drought, but farmers no longer have that cushion, he said.
The ethanol industry's corn usage will help keep corn prices stable this year, Bleeke said. But he foresees a potential bump in corn prices in the next two to four years if ethanol production continues to rise and weather conditions don't harm crops.
"Down the road with ethanol usage, we should see an increase of 10 to 20 cents (a bushel) on our normal yields," he said.

Farmers nationwide may plant 2 million more acres of soybeans instead of corn to avoid buying expensive nitrogen fertilizers needed to grow corn, Bleeke said. -
