Donald E. Bleeke, a resident of Westfield, NJ and Kennebunk, Maine passed away on July 30, 2005 in Biddeford, Maine at the age of 88.
He was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on June 7, 1917 where he graduated from Southside H.S. He earned his BA degree at the University of Miami in Florida where he had received a full scholarship to play violin in the symphony orchestra. He then received his Masters Degree in Psychology from Boston University. In between those two degrees, he served in WWII in the Coast Guard.
He continued his violin playing by joining the Plainfield Symphony Orchestra in Plainfield, NJ. He played with them for over 30 years. He also sang Tenor in the Choral Art Society of NJ, in the Westfield Glee Club and in several church choirs.
As an educator, he taught at all the grade levels. He started the First Reading Center at the University of NJ at Kean College. He taught for many years as a Reading Specialist. He was a member of NJEA, NEA, Phi Mu Alpha: Sinfonia Music Fraternity, the Westfield Historical Society, the YMCA "Old Guard" of Westfield, a member of "The Merry Men" singing group, the Audubon Society, and the AARP. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cranford, NJ.
