Robin Bledsoe, executive director of Avalon: A Center for Women and Children, said she is thrilled that a new shelter is being built.Although Avalon is a shelter for victims of domestic violence, the shelter will take in homeless women and children when there is room.
"We are continually being asked to house homeless people on a regular basis," Bledsoe said."We have to take our domestic violence victims first, but we have tried to open up the shelter to meet the needs of the homeless, particularly now that the weather is getting cold."
But with only 19 beds, Avalon has to turn away some women.
"When you get a call from someone who has three kids in a car and they have no where to go for the night, it tears your heart out to say we have nowhere to put them," Bledsoe said."There is definitely a need for a shelter like ,the Natasha House.,
"We'll certainly work with this new shelter any way we can," she said.
