TOPEKA - Bob Blecha, a lawman for four decades, was named Wednesday as director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation as it moves more into areas such as computer crimes but maintains its traditional role of assisting law enforcement agencies.
Blecha, 64, replaces Larry Welch, who announced in January that he would retire at the end of May after 12 years as KBI chief. The new director is the KBI's 11th, and the seventh to come from within the agency since its start in 1939.
"If you were ever to say, 'Find somebody who epitomizes what a real Kansas lawman is,' it would be Bob Blecha," said Attorney General Paul Morrison, who appointed him.
