Robert Bleakley Former CEO of Sothebys AustraliaRobert Bleakley attended UNE, studying liberal arts and later completed art studies as an intern with Sothebys in London.
In 1974 he was appointed as specialist in charge of the tribal art department for Sothebys auctioneers in London, UK.His responsibilities included the identification, authentication and preparation of catalogue entries for tribal objects from Africa; Oceania and Australasia and the Americas.He was appointed director of the department in 1978 and continued in that role until 1982 when he left London to establish Sothebys in Australia.He is the author of 'African Masks' published by Thames and Hudson 1975 as well as numerous catalogues in the fields of tribal arts and Australian painting in particular, Australian Aboriginal art.
He was founder of Sothebys in Australia in 1982 and acted as managing director and later as chairman until 1998 when he retired from the art company to focus his energies as chairman of the realty company.He is the inaugural chairman of the Pathways Foundation which is a national NFP conducting contemporary rites of passage camps for young men.
He is the founder and owner of the Verona 'arthouse' Cinema complex in Oxford Street, Paddington NSW and now lives on the north coast of NSW where he pursues interests in community based work while maintaining an active and diverse range of interests and pursuing business life. -
