Ann Blazier
Ann Blazier.CFI, CFII, is proof that mid-life career switches are not only possible, but highly desirable.Particularly if they involve aviation.
Ann always wanted to fly.But other things intervened.Things like school, college, a marriage and four children.Yet the desire to fly remained strong.More than a dozen years ago, her aviation stars began to align. Thanks to a decent job as a computer systems specialist for a metropolitan New York insurance company, she had the resources to fly.Her kids were grown and moving out of the house, so she had time. And her husband Chuck gave her unwavering support.
Ann started her student flying at Essex County Airport, then moved to Morristown. In 1991, she earned her private pilots certificate at Sky Manor in Pittstown.
"For the first couple of years, I rented a Grumman Tiger at Morristown Airport and just flew around recreationally," Ann remembers."But once I got my private pilot certificate, I decided everyone should fly, so I started to think about becoming a flight instructor."She points out that when her second grandson was about to be born in Burlington, NJ, she flew to Flying W to be with her son and daughter-in-law at the birth.
Ann joined the 150th Aero Flying Club at Morristown, and flew Cessnas. She continued to feel the desire to become a flight instructor.Ann earned her instrument rating in 1997 and her commercial rating a year later. She then became a regular behind Aero Safety Training's reception desk for a couple of years, as she worked toward the launch of her next career - flight instructor.
She earned her CFI and CFII ratings in Arizona in 2000.
"Learning to fly should be a positive and joyful experience," Ann says."For my students, I want learning to fly to be smoother and less difficult than it was for me."
In addition to membership in the 150th Aero Flying Club, Ann is a member of the North Jersey Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, AOPA, the National Association of Flight Instructors, Morristown Area Pilots Association and AirLife, Inc.
Ann's biggest supporters in her new career are her husband Chuck, her four children and six-going-on-eight grandchildren."One way or another," she says, "I'll get them all hooked on flying."
