"ARUP has the only AABB certified Immunohematology Reference Laboratory in Utah, which can resolve complicated red cell antibody dilemmas and identify the rare units of blood required for compatibility in our patients" says Rob Blaylock, ARUP's Medical Director.

Blood needed for neonates and children's heart surgeries must be less than five days old, which creates an ongoing need for fresh blood.Providing this special need for Utah's children creates significant challenges for ARUP.This came into light in the aftermath of September 11 when hundreds of people volunteered to donate blood in response to the terrorist attacks.Because ARUP educated people about fresh blood needs and the life span of blood components, people were willing to schedule their donations to meet blood needs in the following days and months.For the first time ever, blood did not have to be imported from out of state.Local blood needs were met by local people.

Dr. Blaylock is the medical director of the Immunohematology Reference Laboratory, Blood Services, and Phlebotomy and Support Services at ARUP, and the Clinical Laboratory and Transfusion Services at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics.He is also an associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine.Dr. Blaylock received his MD from the University of Utah School of Medicine and is board certified in clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology, with special certification in blood banking/transfusion medicine.Dr. Blaylock coauthored Practical Aspects of the Transfusion Service.

Robert Blaylock, medical director of blood services for ARUP, says today's aging population is making blood even more critical."We're trying to educate people at a young age that blood donation is a good thing," he said.

But Dr. Robert C. Blaylock, Medical Director for Transfusion Services at ARUP Laboratories, which provide emergency blood supplies to the U Hospital, does not think Polyheme will replace the need for human blood.
