FORT WAYNE-- Benjie S. Blauvelt , brought to Indiana from Texas last week to face charges in a 15-year-old murder, made his initial court appearance Tuesday.
Blauvelt is charged with killing an Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne associate professor in 1991. Allen Superior Judge John F. Surbeck told Blauvelt he has been charged with murder, felony murder, burglary and robbery.
He assigned a public defender in the case after Blauvelt told him he couldn't afford an attorney. Blauvelt's next hearing is Dec. 22, when his trial date will be set.
Police believe Blauvelt, 36, fled Indiana after being charged in March 1992 with murder in the death of Maurice Lam, an IPFW engineering professor originally from Hong Kong who went missing in December 1991.
