   "It is an inconvenience, but it seems to be less painful than I thought it would be," said Bryan Blaum, assistant manager of the Compaq Center, whose patrons have been forced to find alternate routes to concerts and sporting events at the arena.
   
   The construction is part of an ongoing West Loop improvement project that began in August 2001. It includes redesigned ramps, West Loop frontage roads passing under the Southwest Freeway and a connector to the tollway, which itself is under construction south of the freeway.
   
   The closure of the Southwest Freeway's north- and southbound main lanes this weekend will allow reconstruction of overhead ramps.
   
   Two ramps at the interchange -- the West Loop southbound ramp to the Southwest Freeway northbound and the West Loop northbound ramp to the Southwest Freeway southbound -- will be closed beginning at 8:30 tonight.
