The referendum drew a record voter turnout for ESU, with 21 percent of the student population participating, according to Angela Blaufuss, current president of the Associated Student Government.

Out of 920 votes cast, 739 students voted in favor of the fee increase and 181 students voted against it.

Blaufuss said the turnout was huge compared to years past.

"Two years ago, there was a 6 percent turnout," Blaufuss said this morning. "Last year, there was an 8 percent voter turnout. So we're very excited. Every time I tell that to people I get goosebumps still."

ASG has been instrumental in driving the renovation campaign, but Blaufuss credits the students with being especially engaged in the process.

"It's overwhelming in a sense," she said, "because usually students don't take time out of their day to go listen to people talk, but from the beginning of this project we've had students wanting to go to the vision sessions and wanting to come back to us."

Plans for the renovation aim to make the union into a "second home" for the student population, Blaufuss said.

"You can have your dorm room, and that's where you sleep, but it's not really where you can feel engaged with your friends," Blaufuss said.

"It is very important to represent your constituents," said Angela Blaufuss, senior crime and delinquency studies major and ASG president, to the senate floor. "It's not your personal opinion when your hand goes up (to vote). It's what you think the people that you are supposed to be representing (would think)."

Blaufuss said that she would like the senators to meet with their assigned Recognized Student Organizations and people from the college that they represent at least once a week.

"The things that we will be voting on, all students need to have their opinions heard," Blaufuss said.

Blaufuss and Anna Meyerhoff, senior political science major, are making plans to bring workshops about ASG to the students who live in the residence halls.

That's how long Angela Blaufuss, senior crime and delinquency studies major from Olpe, and Sarah Schulte, senior microbial and cellular biology/premedical major from Omaha, Neb., have wanted to be leaders of Emporia State University's Associated Student Government.

They achieved their leadership objectives this past spring when Blaufuss was elected ASG president and Schulte was named vice president for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Throughout their time serving on ASG, both Blaufuss and Schulte have held a number of leadership positions.

Blaufuss was the University Affairs chair one year and organized the first "Can the Bods" food drive event against Washburn University.She also served on the presidential search committee in the fall of 2006.

Blaufuss said she wanted to be ASG president because she cares so much about ESU.

"After God and family, my greatest love is Emporia State University and the ESU student body.As ASG president I felt I would have an opportunity to give back to the campus community in some way for everything it has given me," she said.

While campaigning, Blaufuss and Schulte took a more unconventional approach and decided to run without a platform.

"It was important for us to run without a platform because we felt we should be open for promoting the needs and wants of the student body, not our personal wants and needs for Emporia State University," Blaufuss said.

"When your business is packed, or at capacity or is completely empty it is not because you do or do not let people smoke," said Angela Blaufuss, ASG president and supporter of the ordinance. "It is the type of business owner you are, the atmosphere you create and the drink specials you offer that determines your success."

Blaufuss wanted to make clear that she was speaking at the meeting as a community member and not as a representative of all university students.

One issue over which Blaufuss expressed concern is the relationship that senators have with Emporia State students. She said that there is a level of disconnectedness from the student body and she wants all of the senators to get to know the students that they are representing.

Blaufuss said that she encourages students to sign up for Rave.

"My dad was well known for his efforts to get scholarships for students," said Angela Blaufuss, senior crime and delinquency studies major and ASG president.

The continuation of the event shows how much ESU cares, Angela Blaufuss said.

"It means a lot to me that this university is doing something that my dad would approve of," Blaufuss said.

Laptops will also be set up in various buildings to help students vote, said Angela Blaufuss, senior crime and delinquency studies major and ASG president.

"We're going to go to different buildings and set up laptops to really push students to vote," Blaufuss said. "It's really important.

Blaufuss agreed that candidates need to get more students involved in the process.

"It's about getting out there this year," Blaufuss said.
