"A lot of toys are hot now and selling great, but you don't hear about them because they're in great supply," Ms. Blau said.

"Furby wasn't scheduled for delivery to toy stores until October but by then parents read about it, thought it was a great idea and the demand was there before the product," Ms. Blau said.

But a big Furby Christmas won't ensure Furby's place on store shelves.

"Only time will tell if Furby is as big a hit as Cabbage Patch dolls because what makes Furby big is technology and technology advances so fast that this year's Furby may be obsolete next year," Ms. Blau said.

Lori S. Blau has been named Senior Director of Guest Services at the Maryland Science Center.A former sales and service training manager at Toys R Us, she oversaw guest services and operations of 21 stores from Tidewater to Northern Virginia.
