   Greg Blatnik , managing director of Zona Research , an Internet industry consulting firm in Redwood City , Calif. , dismisses the idea that employers have a nefarious motive--getting free labor from their employees--in giving their workers home computers.
   
   Blatnik said that home PCs allows employees to perform functions such as checking their work e-mail before leaving their homes in the morning. People are doing this even when the company has not paid for the PC , he said. It's become part of the fabric of not only people's jobs , but of people's lives , he added.
   
   Blatnik said that offering home computers as an employee benefit is clearly beneficial to the employer. It immerses employees more deeply in the very important skills of computer and Internet use and allows the company to more easily communicate with its workforce , he said. From their homes , employees can access the company intranet system , get updated on workplace news , or take a training class , he said.
   
   As for the employees , Blatnik said , they get the clear benefit of a computer and Internet access at little or no cost.
