NEW YORK-Olympic gold-medalist Jeff Blatnick has been named president of the newly formed Mixed Martial Arts Council. The MMAC is the sanctioning body for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and other mixed-martial arts events. I'm honored to serve as president of the MMAC on a sport that I have come to support and love , Blatnick said. My mission for mixed martial arts is threefold : to maintain the highest safety standards for fighters , to prove to critics that MMA is a sport , and to make MMA acceptable for regulation by state athletic commissions. I hope to develop an understanding with the general public , politicians and the cable industry that this sport has integrity , credibility , safety and the highest quality athletes from the different martial arts disciplines. I look forward to creating an advisory board made up of acknowledged experts that will encompass the various forms of the martial arts , including jujutsu , taekwondo , karate , judo and , of course , wrestling..

Blatnick gained international fame at the 1984 Olympics , where he won a gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling. Networks worldwide picked up on his story because he had overcome Hodgkin's disease just two years before the Games. In recognition of these two achievements , he was elected by teammates to carry the U.S. flag in the closing ceremony. Since then , Blatnick has gone on to a successful , multifaceted career as a sports analyst and commentator. He also is a national spokesperson for the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sport , a member of the Board of Directors of USA Wrestling and a motivational speaker for leading corporations in the United States and abroad.
