   Blaszkiewicz, 45, said she began coaching soccer and basketball there because of her previous involvement with Hoops for Hearts.

   Blaszkiewicz, adding she donated at recent Red Cross blood drives there.
   
   She said she was kidded about her blood donations when she received the award.
   
   "The funny part is, I'm a big coward," she said. "But my reply was, 'I lead by example, even when I'm afraid of needles,' " she said.
   
   Blaszkiewicz is looking forward to working this winter with her son, Kent Allis, a seventh-grader at Fegely Middle School, who plays soccer at the club.

   Blaszkiewicz is business division chair at Ivy Tech State College in Gary, teaching computer courses, while she works on her Ph.D. in education online.

   Blaszkiewicz said she has a little time left over for gardening, what with work, school and being a mom.
   
   "I see myself teaching until my son is out of high school," she said. "I believe giving back to the local community is a neat thing."
   
   Blaszkiewicz said her job as a computer teacher at Ivy Tech has helped her overcome the difficulty she has talking about herself.
   
   "I learned from helping my students develop their own PowerPoint presentations about themselves," she said.
   
   Her favorite thing about teaching and the club is the kids.
   
   "They help keep you young," she said.
