JNF World Co-Chair Ezra Benyamini
The work of the Keren Kayemet L'Yisrael, or Jewish National Fund, is world-renowned.From tree-planting campaigns to irrigating the Negev desert, the organization, founded in 1901, has been helping the Jewish nation ever since.IMAGE Magazine editors were recently privileged to talk to Mr. Ezra Benyamini, world co-chair of the Jewish National Fund.Ezra Benyamini was born in Israel in 1948 and was raised in a house of strong love for the land of Israel.
...
In 2002, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon asked Mr. Benyamini to become the co-chairman of the board of directors of the Jewish National Fund.
...
Mr. Benyamini started things off by immediately warning Jews of the large demographics crisis that Israel faces.Right now, Benyamini pointed out, there are 5.1 million Jews living in Israel, compared with 4.8 million Arabs. Many experts predict that in a decade, the Arabs will be the majority. An even greater problem, says Mr. Benyamini, is that the Jewish presence in Israel is shrinking."Arab cities in the Galil have become the majority.Only 8 percent of the Israeli population lives in the Negev Desert, even though the Negev is 60 percent of Israel's land."Mr. Benyamini wants it to be known that Jews must have a strong presence in all parts of the land, or they will be in danger of losing it. We all know the importance of the land, as Mr. Benyamini explained, "The existence of the Jewish people, all over the world, depends on the state of Israel.
...
"As long as we are united," said Mr. Benyamini, "we cannot be defeated."Currently, the Jewish National Fund is working on projects in ecology, improvement of parks and recreation areas, and helping Israel's water supply by building up water reservoirs in the Galil and bringing life to the desert in the Negev.
...
Clearly, Mr. Benyamini has strong feelings about the state of Israel and is doing anything he possible can to ensure that the Jewish National Fund remains the important piece of Israeli life that it always has been.
