Mr. Billings died November 13, 1984.He always worked diligently with Grace and the members of the Society to preserve and develop the Victorian home of Josiah H Gordon, and later Milnor Roberts, to restore it to its original dwelling.
Mrs. Billings worked as a volunteer in many organizations of Cumberland.She was a member and officer of the Women's Civic Club, founding member and one of the curators of History House establishing the research library for students of local history.She and her husband helped initiate Operation Gateway and were instrumental in obtaining and restoring the Route 40 Toll Gate House and also the Paw Paw Tunnel on the C&O Canal to encourage tourism in the Cumberland area.
Her volunteer work did not stop with history and tourism.She was a charter member and she was very active in the Grace Baptist Church.She was director and teacher for adults in the educational programs and originated the first Baptist Vacation Bible School in the district.This remarkable lady also spearheaded the first hot lunch program at LaVale Elementary School and was a member of Cresap Chapter DAR, and Cumberland Chapter #56, Order of the Eastern Star.
