Since Karen Bialek was a child, she's been in love with the Mountain State Forest Festival. It's a relationship that began as a 4-year-old walking hand-in-hand to the festival with her father to becoming the president of the organization's board of directors.

Bialek has held many titles over the years. She began working as a volunteer in 1978 and worked her way to director general in 2001. She is currently the president of the MSFF board of directors.

"When I was a little girl, we lived out by Highland Park and my dad and I would walk from the bottom of Cut Hill to the festival," Bialek said. "My mom didn't like the festival much, so dad would park at the bottom and we would walk up the hill. I fell in love with the festival. The only year I missed was 1970, I lived out of state ... Going from a 4-year-old girl who walked to the festival to being the president of the festival is pretty nice."

There are very few committees that Bialek hasn't served on. She has worked on everything from the Children's Parade to organizing the symphony. For many years, she also put together the MSFF program and sold the advertising for it.

As a comical side note, Bialek said the only committee she didn't remember working on was the lumberjack contest, but she did help set up the concession stand for it early one morning.

"It was still dark one morning when I helped set up the concession stand for the lumberjack contest," Bialek said. "I had to use the headlights on my car. I forgot and left the lights on and the battery went dead. The car wouldn't start."

Bialek said her favorite part of the festival is the window displays and the parades.

"I just like being involved with the festival," Bialek said. "Having people come back, who appreciate it. You get excited when everyone else is excited. I just love the festival. I always have from the time I was a little kid."

Although Bialek finds the festival rewarding, she said it is very time consuming. She compared being director general to working a full-time job. She said so many people work very hard all year round to make the festival a success and they all deserve credit.

"I love the festival," Bialek said.
