Heather Bettini, the only varsity girls volleyball coach in Bartlett High School's history, resigned that position on Thursday.

But the decision didn't come without some pain for the popular and likable coach.

"It's been very hard the last couple of days," Bettini said. "The hardest part was telling the kids."

But kids - or more appropriately, kid - was the reason for Bettini's decision. She and her husband Mike are expecting their second child in October.

"The timing is the big thing," Bettini said. "I don't want to leave the girls in a lurch in the middle of regionals or something like that. It's something my husband and I have hashed out over and over the last couple of months.

"The kids were sweet and understanding and they wished us the best."

Bettini was 61-68-4 in her four varsity seasons in charge of the Hawks' program. But, after a 6-21 campaign in 1998, the school's first varsity season, she guided the Hawks to seasons of 20-15-1 in 1999, 18-17 in 2000 and 17-15-2 this past season, including a berth in the regional title match.

    ...
Bettini came to Bartlett from St. Charles, where she was on Marv Leavitt's coaching staff.

After graduating from St. Charles, Bettini played four years of volleyball at the University of Iowa.

She coached the freshman team at Bartlett in 1997 before taking over the varsity program.

And even though she's leaving the coaching ranks for now, she didn't count out a return at some point.

"I love the game and I don't see myself leaving it entirely," said Bettini, who teaches social studies at Bartlett. "I think coaching is definitely still in my future. It's hard to leave the kids. It's been very hard the last couple of days. I'm really excited (about the baby) but I'm really torn up about leaving."

With nine players returning to the varsity next season, Bettini is confident she's leaving the program in solid shape.

"We're a very up and coming program," she said. "I think we've shown that the last couple of years. It's been really exciting to see it grow.

"The first couple of years were tough but the last couple have been really exciting and this is a program that's just going to get better and better."

When one thing gets away we have nothing to pull us over that hump right now , said Bartlett coach Heather Bettini , whose team is now 1-2 for the season.
