HUDSON -- Intel engineer Paul Betti Jr. has been fighting fires in town for six years, but never learned as much as he did in a new course for call firefighters at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Springfield.
Call firefighters Betti, Dan Sullivan, John White and Jeff Chaves volunteered 140 hours over the past six months to attend the Fire-Fighter I-II Plus course.
...
Betti, 37, already has extensive emergency training and has worked as a leader and consultant on Intel's hazardous materials team.
"When I got a chance to be a call firefighter it just made sense," he said. "I've had a working relationship with the Hudson Fire Department for 15 years." He expects his Intel hazmat experience benefits the Fire Department, and that Intel will benefit from the fire academy training.
...
"Over the whole year you're not getting as much (experience) as they jammed into us in sixth months," Betti said of the training.
To be certified at the I-II level, the firefighters must pass written and practical exams, and Betti said all four are on their way.
