   "The last step in it is getting the shareholders' approval at the annual general meeting, which will be tomorrow," said Alstom's local communications manager Kimberley Bettens.
   
   She said the sale should not necessarily endanger any jobs.
   
   "Alstom in Australia and New Zealand are a very successful and profitable business in their current configuration and we see no reason why that should change," she said.
   
   "But the purchaser will make the ultimate decision."
   
   The French conglomerate's other divisions in Australia, such as its power, industrial products and information technology operations, were unaffected, she said.
   
   The Australasian transport division involves rail and road transport, as well as infrastructure.
   
   Alstom's freight locomotive business in Valencia, Spain, is also believed to be up for sale as part of the plan, but Ms Bettens did not comment on this.
