The first year for any golf course is somewhat of a learning experience and Andy Bethune, part owner and director of golf for the Sawmill Golf Course, learned plenty.

Approximately 13,000 rounds were played at the Saginaw Township course with an abbreviated season that began with the June 1 opening. The goal is for at least 18,000 rounds this year.

"We learned that we have a good golf course that this area has been looking for," said Bethune.
    ...
"It's deceiving from the road," said Bethune.
    ...
Bethune said No. 7, a 475-yard par 4 is a fun "swing-away" type hole that can set golfers up to finish their first nine in a favorable fashion.
    ...
Holes 15 through 18 have more of a links feel and as Bethune described it, "a chance to swing away a bit after being in the woods for awhile."

This season Bethune will offer a complete instructional program. He previously served as a golf instructor at the Saginaw Country Club and Bay Valley Golf Club.

For several years, John DalCorobbo has tried to help good friend and golf partner Andy Bethune earn a spot in the Tournament of Champions.
    ...
"It's great to win, but I'm even more excited that I was able to help Andy get in," said DalCorobbo, who already has an exemption to play in next week's 54-hole showdown at Boyne Mountain, which brings together Michigan's male and female amateur and professional champions.
    ...
Bethune, who turns 39 today, played in the Tournament of Champions as the state PGA Central Section winner in 1998, but he has been trying to get back ever since. Tuesday's Classic victory gave him a share of the $2,400 top prize from title sponsor E-Z-GO, plus - more importantly - a 15-year exemption to the T of C. "It's pretty exciting," said Bethune, head professional at The Sawmill in Saginaw. "Anything that the Michigan PGA does is first class, and to play in another one of their majors is exciting. They make us feel like tour players even though we wake up the next day to give lessons and fold shirts (in the pro shop)." DalCorobbo, of East Lansing's Forest Akers Golf Club, and Bethune opened the 36-hole tournament with an 11-under 61 in Monday's better-ball format, a first-round record.
    ...
When Makoski and Kondratko parred the 18th, they left the door open for DalCorobbo and Bethune, and they marched through it.
    ...
After DalCorobbo's tee shot left the duo 142 yards short of the green, Bethune stroked an 8-iron to within six feet.
    ...
Bethune said the number was right on target. "We had just as many as we needed," he said. "One less and we'd still be out there." Bethune said he and DalCorobbo have played in the Shanty Creek Classic so many times that their final round on the Schuss course felt like a scene from a popular movie starring Bill Murray. "It was like Groundhog Day," Bethune said.

We learned that we have a good golf course that this area has been looking for , said Bethune. All the vital signs , all the feedback we've received from customers , has been favorable..

    ...
It's deceiving from the road , said Bethune. It looks open ; sort of like a links layout. But the course is very diverse , offering a little bit of everything. The most beautiful part is the wetlands area. It gives you a real up-north and away-from-it-all feeling.

We like to say that when you tee it up at the 10th hole you're only 400 yards from the heart of northern Michigan..
    ...
Bethune said No. 7 , a 475-yard par 4 is a fun swing-away type hole that can set golfers up to finish their first nine in a favorable fashion. Another popular hole is No. 11 , a pretty 215-yard par 3 with wetlands ready and waiting to gobble up any short shots.

No. 12 , a 307-yard par 4 looks like a nice hole to score well and indeed it is very reachable as long as you're accurate.

Generous greens -- the average size is 6 , 500 square feet -- do make things fun if golfers can avoid the trouble.

    BAY VALLEY GOLF CLUB

This Desmond Muirhead-designed layout , just a 5-iron off I-75 in Bay City , is the grand daddy of top-quality courses in the area. It opened in 1973 and ever since it has been a popular stop for both Michigan tourists heading north and visiting Canadians.
