   The first year for any golf course is somewhat of a learning experience and Andy Bethune, part owner and director of golf for the Sawmill Golf Course, learned plenty.
   
   Approximately 13,000 rounds were played at the Saginaw Township course with an abbreviated season that began with the June 1 opening. The goal is for at least 18,000 rounds this year.

   For several years, John DalCorobbo has tried to help good friend and golf partner Andy Bethune earn a spot in the Tournament of Champions.

   "It's great to win, but I'm even more excited that I was able to help Andy get in," said DalCorobbo, who already has an exemption to play in next week's 54-hole showdown at Boyne Mountain, which brings together Michigan's male and female amateur and professional champions.

   Bethune, who turns 39 today, played in the Tournament of Champions as the state PGA Central Section winner in 1998, but he has been trying to get back ever since. Tuesday's Classic victory gave him a share of the $2,400 top prize from title sponsor E-Z-GO, plus - more importantly - a 15-year exemption to the T of C. "It's pretty exciting," said Bethune, head professional at The Sawmill in Saginaw. "Anything that the Michigan PGA does is first class, and to play in another one of their majors is exciting. They make us feel like tour players even though we wake up the next day to give lessons and fold shirts (in the pro shop)." DalCorobbo, of East Lansing's Forest Akers Golf Club, and Bethune opened the 36-hole tournament with an 11-under 61 in Monday's better-ball format, a first-round record.

   We learned that we have a good golf course that this area has been looking for , said Bethune. All the vital signs , all the feedback we've received from customers , has been favorable..

   It's deceiving from the road , said Bethune. It looks open ; sort of like a links layout. But the course is very diverse , offering a little bit of everything. The most beautiful part is the wetlands area. It gives you a real up-north and away-from-it-all feeling.
   
   We like to say that when you tee it up at the 10th hole you're only 400 yards from the heart of northern Michigan..

   No. 12 , a 307-yard par 4 looks like a nice hole to score well and indeed it is very reachable as long as you're accurate.
   
   Generous greens -- the average size is 6 , 500 square feet -- do make things fun if golfers can avoid the trouble.
