   Former Director Brenda Bethman, who was instrumental in the creation of the Women's Center in 2001, left A&M this year to become director of the Women's Center at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
   
   When Bethman started working with the Women's Center, she said, she reported to Bill Perry, who was executive associate provost but has since left A&M. The organization then was transferred to the purview of the vice president for diversity.
   
   James Anderson served as A&M's first diversity chief, but he left in 2005 to take a job in New York, and Bethman said she didn't feel that she received as much support in her post following his departure.
   
   Bethman stressed the importance of women's centers, noting that they provide a central resource for women's issues. The center at A&M is particularly important, she said, because it provides a haven for women as well as members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
   
   The fate of a center shouldn't be dependent upon the director, she said. Rather, the administration should make a commitment to embrace the center's mission. Administrators must set that example and then hire someone who can follow their lead, she said.
   
   "The university as a whole needs a vision for the center," Bethman said Tuesday. "It's kind of lacking that. There's confusion.
