Hundreds of Bahamians and other individuals attended the funeral service at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Kirk on Wednesday 9 January, for the late Charles Walter Frederick Bethel, CBE. Family members, Parliamentarians headed by Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham and Opposition Leader Perry Christie, members of the judiciary, Police Commissioner Paul Farquharson and members of the force, members of Mr. Bethel's staff, and his friends, among them some of the nation's most successful business leaders, remembered the former MP who served in Parliament - the House of Assembly, Legislative Council (now Senate) and the Executive Council- for more than 30 years.

Mr. Bethel died in his sleep at his daughter's home in New Orleans early on the morning of January 2. He and his wife, Brenda would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September this year. In a Grand Bahama and Bimini by-election in 1939 he was elected to the House of Assembly at the age of 30. He had been a member of the House for 20 years before he was appointed to the Legislative Council (later the Senate) in December, 1959. He was a member of the Executive Council, 1955-58, but retired because of ill health. During his time in the House he was Deputy Speaker and acted as Speaker for a year during the illness of the late House Speaker Sir Asa Pritchard. In 1963 when The Bahamas was granted internal self government, he was appointed government leader in the Senate and Minister without Portfolio. He also ran the office of the Parliamentary Registrar. Mr. Bethel was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 1964.
