   Motherwell Bridge Holdings Limited today announced that Archie Bethel (48) had joined the parent company board and had been appointed to the newly created position of Group Chief Operating Officer. Mr Bethel, who joined Motherwell Bridge in April 1996 as Managing Director of the Group's Engineering Division, will now be responsible for all of the Group's operational activities.

   Prior to joining Motherwell Bridge, Mr Bethel was the first Chief Executive of the Lanarkshire Development Agency and was awarded the OBE in 1996 for services to enterprise in Lanarkshire.
   
   He started his industrial career with Motherwell Bridge as a young engineering graduate and then spent fifteen years working for a US based Oilfield equipment manufacturer both in the U.K. and the U.S.A. He also had a spell working for Morrison Construction.

   Archie Bethel, who joined the company in 1996 as chief operating officer, stepped down in August. He was frequently tipped as a possible chief executive after holding a similar role at Lanarkshire Development Agency.
   
   At one time he talked of taking Motherwell Bridge to the stock market but recent years have dealt a number of blows.
   
   Bethel has lodged a rival buy-out bid for the company but it is thought to have little chance of success.
   
   Motherwell Bridge is majority-owned by its management, staff, descendants of the founders and a number of venture capitalists, including 3i and Dunedin.
